Driving change: sustainable signage practices in the Industry

Sustainability is on every business owner’s priority list – and if it’s not, then it should be. And thinking sustainably should extend to every element of your business and marketing, including your signage.

Unlike a few years ago, there are plenty of sustainable signage options available nowadays, as long as you know where to look. So what should you be thinking about when ensuring your company’s signage is as eco-friendly as possible?

Consider sustainable signage materials

Signs are commonly made of plastic, specifically PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic. But with plastic pollution a growing problem, and PVC considered the most environmentally damaging plastic*, now is the time to look elsewhere.

PVC-free vinyl is a brilliant alternative for signage. Because it is made from plastics and polymers that are more easily recyclable, it has a smaller carbon footprint compared with PVC.

Signs don’t have to be made of plastic at all – steel, aluminium and recyclable vinyl are among the many other materials available.

Or you can move away from physical products altogether, and consider digital signage options. These are fantastic when it comes to effective messaging, and also have environmental benefits compared to traditional print signage.

Prioritise quality

So many of the materials and items we use day-to-day are not built to last and have short lifespans. Don’t let your signs be among them.

By opting for the highest quality your budget allows, and investing in hard-wearing, reusable signage solutions instead of single-use products, you can be confident that your signs will last the test of time.

Even if the material itself is not fully recyclable, by avoiding single-use signage and thinking long-term, you will still be making an eco-friendly choice. Plus, higher quality products usually work out much more cost effective than cheap, disposable alternatives.

Pay attention to detail

The devil, as we all know, is in the detail and this saying can be applied to signage too. It’s easy to focus on the primary materials that go into making signs and banners, and to forget to consider the environmental impact of the smaller, yet equally essential components.

One example of this is the eyelets that are an essential part of print banners. By choosing recyclable grommet eyelets, you will be making an almost imperceptible change to the product, but a huge difference to your carbon footprint and environmental impact.

And this is just one of many reasons why using a professional signage company such as Elmtree will make such a difference to your business. With sustainability at the forefront of all our minds, bringing in the experts helps you make sure it extends to your signage as well.
