Key considerations not to miss when installing signs

It’s no good investing in stunning signage if you skimp on sign installation. You might think the decision-making is over once the design has been completed and your signage has been created, but signage installation can make all the difference when it comes to the effect and impact of the finished product.

To give you a head start, and spread awareness of the critical factors that go into sign installation, we’re compiled a handy guide to the key considerations you need to bear in mind.

1. Location

Choose the wrong spot, and your signage could turn out to be a failed investment. Think strategically when determining the best location, considering the sign’s intended purpose and audience.

Will the sign be seen by passing vehicles or foot traffic? Will the location showcase the sign to a certain demographic, and is it the demographic you wish to target? And how will your signage work with your surroundings? You want it to stand out, not blend into obscurity, but you don’t want it to become an eyesore, either.

2. Site suitability

Even the best location can throw up issues with installation if the site itself is not suited to your needs.

Be sure to check there is enough physical space to place the sign – bearing in mind any future plans you may have for scaling up your signage. If you are installing digital signage, ensure there is an electricity source close by, and take the time to make certain that the site is safe, stable and free from any debris or obstructions.

3. Visibility

If your sign is not highly visible, it won’t have the desired effect on your business. This is why it’s crucial to have considered the positioning of the sign before you finalise the design.

Make sure the font is legible – even from a distance – and that the angle does not detract from its readability. Consider where the sign will sit in relation to the sun, and how it might be impacted by the sun’s glare at certain times of day.

4. Timing

Don’t forget to think about the timing of your signage installation, especially if the message your sign is designed to convey is seasonal or timely in nature.

Be sure to leave plenty of extra time in your timeline to allow for any weather-related delays to installation, or any unforeseen changes to your signage strategy.

5. Legalities and equipment

Successful installation involves ticking the boxes with the relevant authorities when it comes to site surveys, permits, health and safety, and planning permissions. Don’t forget to make sure these have been taken care of in good time. For complex installations, or those at height, special equipment is likely to be needed, and this may also require certain permissions and assessments to have been completed.

As you can see, there are a lot of crucial considerations to make before your business signage can be successfully installed. For that reason, the safest, easiest and often cheapest solution is to hire professional signage installers to take on the work for you. They will be able to advise on location and site suitability, and can take care of the legalities as well, making it as easy as possible for your signage to do its job.
